在洛衫磯，一個叫 Emilie 的法國女人剛離開她的情人。她正在替自己和她八歲的兒子 Martin 找房子，暫時以路上撿來的傢俱來安置他們的家。她的慌亂不安與其說是透過她自己表達出來，不如說是透過她所觀察的人們表達出來。她只是默默地生活在不斷地自我放逐中。 片名《紀錄說謊家》是由「紀錄片」（documentaire）和「說謊者」（menteur）兩個字串連而成。片中演 Emilie 的正是本片的剪接師 Sabine Mamou；演 Martin 的則是 Varda 的兒子 Mathieu Demy，其中並且穿插了一些 Varda 在路上拍的行人，這讓本片一直遊走於真實／虛構的氛圍中。她試圖捕捉靈魂／身體的錯格狀態：疲憊的身驅卻睡不著，只是等待，等待下一次的流浪、等待曾經熟悉的另一個身驅、或者等待的只是她自己。於是我們不禁要問：甚麼是家？它是流浪的起點或是終點？身體不也是一個家？因為主角和觀眾的身體固定不動，思緒卻早已流浪到遠處；因為 Varda 讓我們、也讓 Emilie 在路上行人的臉上看到了自己的感受。有趣的是，二十年後《艾格妮撿風景》裡的撿拾者，似乎已經在這裡預先讓我們看到了他們的身影。當然，還包括《無法無家》裡的 Mona 。 Varda 曰： 『……在紀錄說謊家《紀錄說謊家》裡，當時間的實體被掏空，然後轉變成空間：海灘、或是兩棟建築物之間所形成迷宮似的一條走道。（……）我所嚐試去做的是：在不安的情緒之間植入一個「時／空」的沉默，好將時間與空間讓位給觀眾、讓他們身處其中、或是讓他們彼此之間能夠聽到所散發出來之情感的騷動不安、語言文字的回音、或是被遺忘的記憶。這就好像是說，我希望在影片的時間裡運用他們生命的時間一樣。我提供一些充滿情感的時刻，然後是這些情感轉移所需要的影像、然後是讓每一個人情感騷動時的所需要的沉默。』 記者問：為什麼有「說謊者」（menteur）在《紀錄說謊家》（Documenteur）裡面？影片裡並沒有揭露甚麼謊言吧？ 『有！……這是與「真理電影」（cinéma-vérité）相反的。這是「謊言夢想電影」（cinéma-songes-mensonges），這是如 Aragon〔阿拉貢〕所說的「真實說謊」（mentir-vrai）一樣，這不是我……。對「紀錄說謊家」來說，包涵著所有這些的「真實說謊」的聲音、臉孔和身體。是誰在說話？以誰的名義說話？當 Sabine 剪接 Sabine 的影像，而我問：「那麼，妳……；我是說，她……」時，我們都有點迷失了。然後，我們對我們自己的迷宮都感到好笑，在那裡面，事實、潛像、真實的影像和幻想的影像，所有這些都有點像。』 與 Fran?oise Audé 和 Jean-Pierre Jeancolas 對談，POSITIF, n°253, 1982年4月
