以牺牲自我为己任为主君服务的日本人被虐的精神结构，从江户时代到现代的7个情节描绘的全能电影。在第13届柏林电影节上获得了金熊奖。这个故事讲述了一位生活在现代的上班族的故事。饭仓在水坝投标时被告知要从上级窃取竞争公司的信息，而作为间谍的那个恋人企图自杀。影片从这里回到饭仓的祖先，讲述了为了主君和国家牺牲而死去的饭仓家七代的残酷历史。以被藩主下葬的切腹开始，殉难、用不义密通的湿衣被砍断男根、在老中献上女儿、在战争中死亡等一系列奇异的情节中，日本人的原形重叠。
